Equity Focused Dialogues- What matters?

We will not be perfect.

It will not always be what we wish it to be

But

It will be our brave space together

And

We will work on it side by side.

-Micky Scottbey Jones from An Invitation to Brave Space

The work of building systems of equity is intentional work that requires intentional spaces for collaboration. See the list below for what matters when creating spaces for equity-focused dialogue.

  • Words matter! Create a shared understanding of common vocabulary like race, inequity and disparity. As a community- hold each other accountable for using language that is uplifting and eliminating language that centers deficit-thinking. In Coaching for Equity Elena Aguilar argues that equity focused communities use language that creates “liberated minds, bodies, heart, and communities.”

  • Community matters! Equity-focused dialogues are built on vulnerability and trust. Communities must take time to learn about each others’ experiences, values, and needs before and throughout this process. The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture offers online resources to support building equity focused communities.

  • Timing matters! Equity-focused dialogues should happen during times when community members have the physical and emotional capacity to engage in the work. Let folx know what to expect and when to expect it. It’s also a good idea to make sure the environment for the conversation is comfortable.

  • Structure matters! Equity-focused dialogues should be safe spaces for educators of color and white educators. Communities should develop tools and structures to ensure equity of voice and encourage deep understanding, connection and commitment. The Communications Guidelines for a Brave Space are a great starting point for developing community norms to structure conversations. Chapter 3 of Ijeoma Oluo’s So You Want to Talk about Race and Chapter 8 of Glenn Singleton’s Courageous Conversations About Race also offer insightful tips and resources for structuring conversations.

What matters to you in creating space for equity-focused dialogue? What tools and resources have been beneficial to your communities?
