Re-imagining Equity Centered Schools

Updated: Sep 15, 2022

What does it look like to re-imagine equity-centered schools? The re-imagining schools process is anchored in ongoing meaningful dialogue coupled with strategic action- it includes community conversations for students, families, faculty and staff to engage with, as well as internal dialogues for individuals to explore to anchor each part of the process.

Below is an outline schools can use to get the ball rolling and the conversation flowing!

Re-Imagining Schools Process

Introspection

Community conversation: How does race impact how students experience our school community? How does race impact how our families experience our school community?

Internal dialogue: In what ways do my racial identities impact my expectations and interactions with students, families and colleagues?

Learning

Community conversation: What community mindsets need to be developed to interrupt disparity in our school? What practices do we need to adopt to advance equity in our learning spaces?

Internal dialogue: What practices and mindsets do I need to adopt to advance equity in our community?

Commitment

Community conversation: What work needs to be done to ensure that the mindsets and practices we have learned are visible in all learning environments? How can students and families hold our community accountable to our commitments?

Internal dialogue: How will I hold myself accountable for enacting the mindsets and practices I have learned to advance equity?

Strategic Action

Community conversation: What strategic equity practices do we want to see present in all learning environments? What impact do we want these practices to have on student outcomes? How will we assess the impact?

Internal dialogue: What mindsets do I need to lean into to enact our communal strategic equity practices? How will our community equity practices impact my students?

Is your school community engaged in the work of re-imagining education? Is there anything missing from our process that you would recommend as we do the work of re-imagining schools for building systems of equity? Comment below!
